Navigation Services is a NEIGHBORS FIRST! program that empowers unhoused residents in our community to navigate the pathways to stability by obtaining government-issued identification documents needed to find a job, rent an apartment, and move forward with their lives.

What We Do
People experiencing the trauma of living unhoused or facing eviction or other housing crisis are often stymied by the obstacles of our bureaucracy and legal systems. They need support to navigate these processes.
People living unhoused often need to replace their identification, as their documents have either been lost or stolen. A state ID or driver’s license is necessary in order to apply for a job, to rent an apartment, or to receive services or benefits. Sometimes this requires us to obtain their original social security card or a certified birth certificate.
Having access to a temporary mailing address is the first critical step for a person who is working to achieve stability in their life. They need a mailing address in order to obtain ID, rent an apartment, or find a job. We can provide a temporary mailing address when needed.
Access to personal hygiene services is basic to a sense of dignity and well-being. It is also a necessity before going to a job interview or to work after employment is obtained. We help our neighbors access laundry and shower facilities.
Employment is a basic step to regaining stability and independence. We do what we can to prepare people for job interviews and support their efforts to work successfully. However, we could use additional volunteers to provide job mentoring.
OTHER SERVICES
Navigation Services volunteers often assist individuals in applying for benefits, such as social security, SNAP, or insurance. We will also provide transportation to medical clinics, to the Social Security Administration office in Georgetown, the local Department of Public Safety, and sometimes to job interviews. We may pay for inexpensive auto repairs as we recognize that having reliable transportation is vital in obtaining employment.
